D.C. United beat the Philadelphia Union 3-1 on Saturday night to snap its three-game losing streak ahead of the September international break. After Yordy Reyna put the Black and Red ahead 2-1 in the 49th minute, Ramón Ábila sealed the victory with a little bit of trickery in extra time.
Several defenders on the Union thought Ábila was offsides when he received a pass in front of the net five minutes into extra time. With several players raising their hands and looking for the flag, Ábila slowed up before pivoting into a quick spin and firing a shot past goalkeeper Andre Blake to ice the match.
The goal was Ábila’s second with DCU since being acquired off waivers from Minnesota United. With the win, D.C. United moved into sole possession of seventh place in the Eastern Conference. The team will resume play Sept. 11 against the New York Red Bulls, the first of 12 matches left on its regular season schedule.
