Do D.C. sports fans have to start wearing "771" gear now?

This is going to be hard to get used to.

Tuesday, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) issued a new area code for the District of Columbia to be phased in over 13 months.

That's right, according to the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (DCPSC), DC will run out of new phone numbers during the third quarter of 2022. To solve this problem the new area code for the region will be 771, supplementing the famed 202 which has been used since 1947.

So what about the 202 sports apparel!? Bryce Harper once wore a "202" shirt -- and his a Make Baseball Great Again hat - for a postgame chat with reporters at his locker at Nationals Park in 2016.

Bailiwick Clothing, Co. has long made 202 gear and that's what Harper was sporting. Miss D.C. 2019 Katelynne Cox rocked the company's tees late last year.

There's no question the 202 number has become part of the District's identity for longtime residents. It's part of who we are. But don't worry. If you have a 202 number you can still keep it. No one will be forced to change. But newcomers won't be so lucky. The 202 brand is going to have to share and 771 is the future.
