Although it may feel a bit surreal, Week 1 is officially here. The 2020 NFL offseason was one like never before, and the ensuing season will also be one unprecedented on many separate levels.
Nonetheless, football is here, and the Washington Football Team is set to begin the Ron Rivera era with a home date with rival Philadelphia Eagles at 1 p.m.
Unfortunately for Washington, the team will be without two of its veteran defensive players that were signed this offseason in free agency.
Linebacker Thomas Davis, who missed multiple practices this week, was ruled out Friday with a calf injury, meaning we'll have to wait at least another week for the 37-year-old to make his Washington debut.
On the outside, the Burgundy and Gold will be without cornerback Kendall Fuller, who's been nursing a knee injury and also been sidelined from practice recently.
Quarterback Alex Smith will also be inactive for Washington. Smith's comeback journey is well-documented and nothing short of remarkable; the fact that he made Washington's 53-man roster 20 months after suffering a near life-threatening leg injury is simply incredible. However, Washington has chosen to go with third-year pro Kyle Allen as Dwayne Haskins' backup, giving Smith more time to fully work back to 100 percent.
Philadelphia enters the 2020 season with a number of injuries, too. The Eagles lead back, Miles Sanders, didn't even make the trip down to Washington as he continues to work back from a hamstring injury. On the outside, wideout Alshon Jeffery also will be inactive, dealing with a foot injury.
The Eagles offensive line suffered a major blow just 90 minutes before kickoff as right tackle Lane Johnson will also be inactive. Johnson was originally questionable for Sunday's game with an ankle injury.
With Johnson sidelined, both Philadelphia's right guard Nate Herbig and right tackle Jack Driscoll will be making their first NFL starts.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles will be without defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who's dealing with both hamstring and pectoral injuries. Defensive end Derek Barnett, who was questionable entering Sunday's game, will be inactive as well.
The Eagles did receive good news this week, however, as rookie wide receiver Jalen Reagor will be able to suit up for his NFL Debut. Philadelphia's first-round pick was originally expected to miss Sunday's contest with a shoulder injury. However, second-round pick Jalen Hurts will be inactive for Philadelphia. Nate Sudfeld will serve as the backup QB to Carson Wentz.
