Chris Cooley on Chase Young: 'He was the best player on the field'

The accolades poured in for rookie Chase Young after last Sunday's performance, but for many Washington fans, no evaluation is complete until former team broadcaster Chris Cooley weighs in.

Well, the results are in, and Cooley was blown away.

"He was the best player on the field," Cooley said of Young. Cooley's comments came via The Kevin Sheehan Podcast and Team 980.

In just his first NFL game, Young logged 1.5 sacks and forced a fumble. His impact, however, was far wider than the stat sheet suggests.

"I don’t know if I’ve ever had that many true impact positive plays by one player," Cooley said.

That's the thing with Young, just his mere presence impacts how offenses line up, use motion and are forced to rotate blocking schemes. More running backs have to chip or stay in on pass protection, guards and/or tight ends have to help to block Young on double teams, and in turn, it opens up the pass rush for other players. Washington took advantage last week against the Eagles, posting eight sacks and turning in a dominant defensive performance for the second half of the game.

Lots of players - and coaches - deserve lots of credit, but that list starts with Young.

Cooley described his pass rush as "menacing" and said some of his moves off the snap are more akin to a basketball crossover than typical defensive line technique.

"I don't know what to say," Cooley said. "It's just awesome."
