Grammy-nominated rapper and DC native Wale has taken his fantasy football team very seriously this year, and the Washington Football Team has starred throughout.
After sharing that he plans to start Dwayne Haskins over Kyler Murray in Week 1 on Sunday, Wale asked his Twitter followers for advice on sleeper running backs to pick up.
He tweeted, “Good morning. Today will be better than yesterday. Ok now that that’s out of the way…I need sleeper RBs for fantasy football.”
Haskins was quick to respond just three minutes later and suggest his teammate Antonio Gibson for Wale’s sleeper pick.
Gibson was drafted 66th overall in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The rookie out of Memphis played wide receiver in college but is expected to have a role in Washington's run game this year. Last season, he had 38 receptions for 735 yards and eight touchdowns and averaged 19.3 yards per catch. He also rushed 33 attempts for 369 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 11.2 yards per attempt. Before last season, he did not have a single rushing attempt.
When Washington announced it would cut veteran running back Adrian Peterson last week, it appeared Gibson would step into a much larger role and that his emergence throughout camp contributed to the team’s decision.
With offensive coordinator Scott Turner's history of relying heavily on pass-catching backs, Gibson could fit well into the Washington offense. Haskins’ recommendation, while certainly biased in some ways, was, in fact, a smart one for people looking for a sleeper running back.
Since Wale has shown bias of his own in starting three Washington players on his fantasy team, there is a good chance he’ll take Haskins’ suggestion and add Gibson to his roster.
