Ryan Fitzpatrick’s debut for Washington lasted less than a half, as he was forced out of the game in the second quarter with a hip injury. Backup Taylor Heinicke came into the game and finished 11 of 15 for 122 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to get the team the win.
After three field goals in the first half left the Washington Football Team behind 13-9, a ridiculous, falling catch by Terry McLaurin set up a Logan Thomas touchdown in the third quarter to give Washington a 16-13 lead.
The defense came up clutch on the next two Chargers possessions, forcing a fumble and an interception, but the offense could not capitalize. Dustin Hopkins missed a 51-yard field goal in the team’s final drive of the third quarter and Antonio Gibson fumbled the ball one play after William Jackson picked off Justin Herbert. Off the fumble, Herbert was able to hit Mike Williams for the go-ahead touchdown, as Los Angeles held on for the 20-16 win.
The team has a quick turnaround this week, as Washington hosts a division foe, the New York Giants, on Thursday night. The Giants bested the Football Team in the two matchups last season and are coming off a loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1.
New York added Kenny Golladay to its wide receiver core this offseason, giving QB Daniel Jones an elite WR1. Saquon Barkley is back this season after missing the majority of last season with an ACL tear. New York is looking to improve in Joe Judge’s second season as head coach after going 6-10 in 2020.
With Fitzpatrick’s status unknown, Heinicke may be getting his first full game of the season against the Giants.
