Shortly after Landon Collins made an incredible play by strip-sacking Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton to lead to a safety for the Washington Football Team defense, the important member of the team's secondary had his day come to an end after he suffered a lower-body injury.
On a scramble by Dalton in the second quarter, Collins remained down on the field before he was helped off, unable to put any pressure on the injured leg. Washington ruled the safety out for the rest of the game with what it is calling an ankle injury.
Collins was carted off the field into the locker room. More tests will be done before the extent of the injury can fully be determined.
Prior to the injury, Collins' big play on defense seemed as if it could be a turning point for the safety. The 2020 NFL season got off to a rough start for Collins, who came to Washington in 2019. While stating that his tackling was not a problem this past week, Collins missed takedowns and had some lapses in coverage that played a big role in Washington's poor defensive performance through the first six weeks.
Getting Collins back up to his elite level of play would add another dimension for the defense and the secondary, something Washington needs going forward. Now, however, the team will have to wait and see just how long they could be without Collins.
