With the Washington Football Team on bye in Week 8 and the NFL Trade Deadline coming up next Tuesday, is it possible franchise icon Ryan Kerrigan has played his last game in burgundy and gold?
Washington is in the unique position of not playing like a true contender, but still having a very real shot at competing for an NFC East title, meaning they could go in a number of directions at this year's trade deadline.
Kerrigan is one of the more popular names speculated by experts as a trade asset this year, and with the deadline just over a week away, it might be time for Washington to make a move.
At least one national expert agrees, and he thinks Kerrigan could wind up being the biggest steal of the deadline.
"Best player/best value who I’d pursue if I were the pass-rush-needy Seahawks or Niners or Patriots: Washington outside ’backer Ryan Kerrigan," NBC Sports' Peter King wrote in his weekly column. "Due $6.8 million for the last 10 weeks of his contract, averages 9.9 sacks a year in his career, always available (four games missed due to injury in 10 seasons), great team guy. A perfect stretch-run add for a contender."
King lays out a great case for Kerrigan. He has been remarkably productive, with 94.0 sacks in his career - all coming in Washington. He has another 4.0 sacks already in 2020, despite his team usually playing from behind and himself playing in more limited snaps behind a deeper front seven.
The Ravens traded for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue already, giving up a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional fifth-round pick. Ngakoue, is much younger and, at this stage in his career, more productive than Kerrigan, so it's likely compensation for the latter would be worse. That could make him a better value than somebody like Ngakoue, even if he contributes less.
As King mentioned, Kerrigan also has a stellar reputation as a leader on and off the field. If Washington decides it is willing to part with such a respected veteran, Kerrigan will surely have no shortage of suitors on the trade market.
