Practice report: Alex Smith, Antonio Gibson remain out

Football Team

For the second consecutive day, both Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith and running back Antonio Gibson did not practice.

Smith is dealing with a calf injury that he suffered during Washington's Week 14 win over San Francisco. Gibson has been sidelined since Week 13 with a toe injury. Both their statuses for Sunday's game against Seattle are in limbo.

Addressing the local media on Wednesday, Smith said he felt he didn't necessarily need to practice this week in order to be ready to play on Sunday.

"You’d love to be able to practice and go and get all the reps and stuff, but I’ve played a lot of football," Smith said. "Certainly, up to this year and where we’re at to this point of the year, this is just the nature of it sometimes."

With Smith out, second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins took Washington's first-team reps in practice for the second straight day. Haskins came on in relief for Smith this past Sunday against the 49ers, completing 7-of-12 passes for 51 yards in his first action since Week 4.

Both injury updates came from Washington's public relations staff. Washington practiced in their indoor bubble today, meaning media were not permitted to attend due to COVID-19 protocols.
