The Washington Football Team is optimistic that starting quarterback Alex Smith will be able to play against the Seattle Seahawks this upcoming Sunday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Smith suffered a calf strain during the second quarter of Washington's Week 14 victory over the San Francisco 49ers and did not return. Second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins took over for Smith and finished the game for the Burgundy and Gold.
The plan for Washington this week is to take it easy on Smith in practice, according to Pelissero, hoping that rest will benefit him more than the practice reps otherwise would.
If Smith is unable to play on Sunday, Haskins will be the starter for Washington -- something that hasn't been the case since Week 4.
Since taking over as the starting QB in Week 10, Smith has led Washington to a 4-1 record. At 6-7 overall, Washington currently is in first place in the NFC East with three games to go.
