Washington QB Alex Smith on NFL return: 'I have to pinch myself sometimes'

This past offseason for Washington Football quarterback Alex Smith was especially eventful as he spent a vast majority of his time recovering from a broken leg he suffered in 2018. Fast forward to Week 5 of the 2020 season and Smith's name has trended back to the top of the headlines after Ron Rivera's decision to bench second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins, promote Kyle Allen to the starting position, and make Smith the immediate backup.

For Smith, practicing with his teammates every day, while being in acceptable shape to compete at the highest level on Sunday's is a dream come true.

Smith and his wife Elizabeth recently joined Angie Goff on an episode of the OH MY GOFF SHOW in which they both reflected on his journey, and looked forward to the future.

"For me to be practicing everyday back on an NFL field again, for me to be back at this point to be doing the things I'm doing, literally I feel like I have to pinch myself sometimes because it's been so long for me," Smith said. "I'd be lying if I said I never doubted that I'd be close to this, so to be doing those things again: crazy things like sprinting, running around playing quarterback with those pads on and rolling, feeling really good, it's so surreal. It's something I don't take for granted at all, I'm very thankful for."

Elizabeth added her thoughts on Smith's recovery and possible return to live Sunday action soon.

"I'm excited, I'm really proud of him," she said. "The fact that he's where he is today on that 53-man is incredible. I would be lying to say I have little reservations about him getting hit out there but I think that comes with the territory."

"He put his mind to this, set his goals, and here he is," she said, "I couldn't be more proud."

Washington (1-3) takes on the Los Angeles Rams (3-1) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and with the way moves have been made recently at the quarterback position, there's certainly a chance we see Smith sooner rather than later.
