Terry McLaurin unanimously named team captain

With safety Landon Collins on Injured Reserve with a torn Achilles, the Washington Football Team had an open team captain spot.

The choice of who to give the 'C' to was an easy one, as the Burgundy and Gold unanimously voted for their second-year stud wideout to fill Collins' void.

"The players unanimously asked that Terry McLaurin be made a team captain," head coach Ron Rivera told the media on Thursday. "We announced it after practice and the guys were really fired up. Very happy for Terry, very well earned honor."

Since arriving in Washington as a third-round pick last season, all McLaurin has done is produce.

McLaurin turned in one of the best seasons by a Washington rookie in franchise history in 2019, finishing just seven yards short of the organization's rookie record. His second year has been even better, as he's top-10 across the NFL in catches and receiving yards.

As good of a receiver as McLaurin has turned into, his head coach has been equally impressed by the work ethic and attitude that he brings to the building on a daily basis.

"What's been impressive is for such a young player, such a young man, to be as mature as he is first and foremost and be the right kind of person you want to be one of your leaders," Rivera said. "A very quiet leader who just goes out and does his job."

Following Washington's victory over the Cowboys in Week 7, McLaurin gave an incredible speech motivating the club to build on the victory. While he wasn't a captain then, that proved he's more than capable of handling that role.

Rivera also mentioned that McLaurin's efforts have been noticed by his veteran teammates, which was another reason why it was an easy decision for the leaders of the team to name him captain.

"His performance does certainly speak on the field, whether it's practice or the game," Rivera said. "That's one thing that's impressed his teammates, especially the veteran teammates who all felt unanimously about it. I think it was a heck of an honor and just glad to see he gets the recognition he deserves."
