The NFL has approved the addition of a 17th regular-season game, marking the first time since 1978 that the league has changed the number of games in the regular season.
Adding an additional game leaves the door open for lots of changes to the single-season record books. Which of the Washington Football Team’s single-season records are in danger of being broken in 2021?
Passing Yards: 4,917 -- Kirk Cousins (2016)
Kirk Cousins set Washington’s single-season passing yard record in 2016 with 4,917 yards. This was his second full season as Washington’s starting quarterback and the only season where he made the Pro Bowl during his tenure. It’ll be up to either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Taylor Heinicke to break that record in 2021.
Passing Touchdowns: 31 -- Sonny Jurgensen (1967)
While Cousins holds the single-season passing yard record, Sonny Jurgensen holds the passing touchdown record with 31. Jurgensen set the record back in 1967, which is remarkable considering the rule changes that have happened since then.
Rushing Yards: 1,613 -- Alfred Morris (2012)
Alfred Morris set the Washington Football Team rushing record in 2012 with 1,613 yards. Morris set the record in his rookie season, which was the first of three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons for the former sixth-round pick.Â
Rushing Touchdowns: 24 -- John Riggins (1983)
John Riggins holds Washington’s single-season rushing touchdown record with 24, set in 1983. This record will be tough to break even with an extra game. Riggins’ mark is the fifth-most in a season in league history, behind only LaDainian Tomlinson (28), Priest Holmes (27), Shaun Alexander (27) and Emmitt Smith (26).
Receptions: 113 -- Pierre Garcon (2013)
Pierre Garcon caught the most passes for Washington in a single season with 113 receptions in 2013. Garcon set the record in Robert Griffin III’s second season as RG3’s main target, with no other receiver topping 45 receptions.
Receiving Yards: 1,483 -- Santana Moss (2005)
Santana Moss set the single-season receiving yards record for Washington in 2005 with 1,483 yards. That season was Moss’ first in Washington, and it was also the only season in his career where he made the Pro Bowl. Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel will look to break Moss’ record in 2021.
Receiving Touchdowns: 12 -- Tied
The receiving touchdown record is a four-way tie between a quartet of players who suited up in the 20th century. Hugh Taylor (1952), Charley Taylor (1966), Jerry Smith (1967) and Ricky Sanders (1988) all share the record with 12 receiving touchdowns.
Sacks: 18.5 --Â Dexter Manley (1986)
The Washington sack record was set by Dexter Manley in 1986, when he totaled 18.5 sacks. A two-time Super Bowl champion with Washington, Manley made the All-Pro first team in 1986. Young pass rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat will have a chance to break Manley’s record with the extra game in 2021.
