It's no secret that the Washington Football Team's biggest strength is its defensive front, highlighted by exceptional pass rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young.
Nobody has a better view of Young and Sweat than standout defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who gets to see the two young pass rushers compete on a daily basis.
So, who will finish with more sacks in 2021 between Washington's two standout edge rushers? Allen was asked such by NBC Sports Washington's JP Finlay and he answered like a true veteran.
"It's tough, man," Allen said in an exclusive interview. "The way we like to think about it is we all rush, four as one, and the quarterback decides who gets the sack. A sack is so situational, it's hard to guess sometimes."
Allen, along with fellow defensive tackles Matt Ioannidis and Tim Settle, are some of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL when it comes to bringing down the quarterback. Daron Payne can also get after the passer as well, evident by the two sacks he notched against Tampa Bay in the playoffs.
So, are there any friendly wagers between just the defensive tackles as to who will have the most sacks this fall? Allen said there has been in the past, but so far that's not in the cards for 2021.
"Lately, with everything that's been going on, we haven't really thought about it," he said. "We're just trying to make sure we win some football games right now."
Allen knows as well as anyone that the job of a defensive tackle is a lot more than just notching sacks. The former Alabama star made it clear that he prides himself on being as much of a disrupter in the run game as he is as a pass rusher.
"Dominate every play. Not just pass, but run as well. Not just run, but pass as well," Allen said, when asked what his goals are this season. "Be the most complete defensive tackle in the league. That's always been my goal."
