Stefon Diggs spent most of the first half of Minnesota's 14-3 preseason win over Pittsburgh on Sunday night watching from the sidelines. But, as many remember from his college days at Maryland, it turns out he was a big play waiting to happen.
With just over four minutes to play in the third quarter -- and one drive after he had made a fair catch on a Pittsburgh punt -- Diggs took a punt 62 yards nearly for a touchdown, being ruled down at the one-yard line after the play was reviewed.
That, predictably, had former teammates cheering on Twitter for the fifth-round pick who has been seen by many as undervalued in the context of his draft position.
Here were a few more Diggs-involved plays on Sunday:
- With 4:20 to play in the second quarter, Vikings quarterback Matt Kafka found MyCole Pruitt wide open across the middle of the field. Pruitt pulled it in and ran toward the end zone on the near sideline. That's where Diggs was, throwing a final block that sealed the touchdown to put Minnesota up 7-3.
- Diggs' first catch came in the third quarter on a bubble screen on the near sideline. He cut it back upfield and gained eight yards.
- Diggs finished the game with two catches for 14 yards and that 62-yard return
- Minnesota plays again in the preseason on Aug. 15 against Tampa Bay
