Braves outfielder Nick Markakis was placed on the COVID-19 injured list as a result of being “potentially exposed” to the coronavirus, the team announced Tuesday. Top prospect Cristian Pache was promoted to the majors in a corresponding move.
Markakis originally opted out of playing this season due to the pandemic but changed his mind a couple games into the season. He’s since hit .353 with one home run and six doubles in 11 games.
According to The Athletic’s David O’Brien, the Braves are hoping to get Pache to Truist Park in Atlanta in time for the team’s 7:10 p.m. game against the Nationals. Pache, a 21-year-old outfielder, is ranked the 14th overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.
The Braves’ outfield depth has been tested this season with star Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-Day Injured List with a sore wrist and centerfielder Ender Inciarte off to a rough start at the plate.
Inciarte, Marcell Ozuna and Adam Duvall were listed at each of the three starting outfield spots for Tuesday night’s game.
