Fewer teams are more in need of a new ballpark than the Rays, who have spent 20 years at a stadium that needed renovating not long after it was built. The white-domed roof is an even bigger eyesore than the rows on rows of always-empty seats that surround the field.

The field is much better shape now that the A's don't have to share it with the Raiders, but the Coliseum remains one of the poorest overall facilities in MLB. Luckily for A's fans, the wait for a new park may finally be coming to an end. The team hopes to open a new stadium on the edge of San Francisco Bay by the start of the 2023 season, though the pandemic may force a delay.

Talk about bad timing. The White Sox opened their new stadium one year before Camden Yards opened in Baltimore. The difference is staggering. It’s a monstrous stadium with symmetrical dimensions, a huge, steep upper deck and a view not of downtown Chicago but of the housing projects next to the Dan Ryan Expressway. They’ve done a few renovations to try to make the place look better, but there really is little than can be done with an eyesore like this.

Chase Field is massive, and can be seen from miles away, resembling a huge airplane hangar more than a ballpark. Now, the Diamondbacks have trouble coming close to sellouts even for big games against prime opponents. The shame is that if you can block out all the extra stuff and focus simply on the playing field and the lower seating bowl, it’s quite a nice place. It’s just really hard to block out everything else.

One of MLB's newest ballparks, Truist Park does its best not to be ugly but offers not much else in terms of quirks and originality. The fan plaza has already proven to be a main attraction but the stadium does nothing to distinguish itself outside of the skyline that serves as a backdrop behind the outfield seats. Even then, the park is located in Cobb County so the surrounding skyline isn't even of Atlanta.

The then-Skydome looked like the coolest stadium in the world when it opened 25 years ago. And at the time, it was a true marvel. It had a retractable dome. It had the biggest scoreboard anyone had ever seen. It had a hotel inside the stadium, for crying out loud. These days, it just feels off. Like Epcot Center, you realize this place once felt futuristic but now feels like a bad example of what we thought the future would look like back in the ’80s.

Say what you will about Minute Maid Park, no one can deny it's one of the most unique parks in baseball. The left field porch is super short, but the left-center field area, while oddly shaped, opens up the ballpark incredibly. A train filled with fake giant oranges above the wall that rides across the train tracks after every home run. They removed Tal’s Hill in center field, which was an accident waiting to happen. But the parks remains quirky, even if it's a little much sometimes.

Similar to Truist Park, the Nationals' stadium is well-designed and gives fans the instant ballpark field as soon as they walk through the centerfield gate. The only thing is, nothing else really stands out. Navy Yard is slowly building up around the stadium, painting a nice D.C. skyline over left field. But as far as the ballpark goes, there aren't many memorable aspects that push the stadium higher up this list.

Change the seats from red to blue, and you might think you were at Nationals Park. There are some real similarities. The shame of the Reds’ stadium is that while it faces the Ohio River, the water is too far away for anybody with a bat to reach it. And the view on the other side of the river is Northern Kentucky, hardly awe-inspiring. Downtown Cincinnati, meanwhile, is directly behind home plate, so you don’t get a view of that unless you’re seated in the outfield.

The windows that allow natural light to flood center field are a nice touch and Bernie Brewer's yellow slide has developed into one of Milwaukee fans' favorite attractions. However, the retractable roof looks ugly from the inside when closed and the stadium sits several miles away from downtown Milwaukee. As much as the ballpark caters to the 21-and-over crowd with some of its amenities, Miller Park is still far from perfect.

You wouldn’t think downtown Detroit would make for much of a backdrop, but you’d be surprised. There are seating issues, particularly in the lower bowl where fans sometimes sit deep under the overhang of the section above them, but few stadiums make the average fan feel like they're right in the middle of the city. It may not be enough to revitalize a devastated downtown area, but it is most definitely reason to visit the Motor City.

One of the biggest ballparks in baseball, T-Mobile Field (formerly Safeco Field) certainly shows its size. The retractable roof closes when it rains, but it doesn’t cover the entire ballpark. That makes it feel more like you’re outdoors (even if it does require bringing a jacket to the game). However, the ballpark does feel a little too big for a team that hasn't made the playoffs in almost two decades.

The two-tiered bullpen is cool, something that more teams could benefit from exploring for future ballparks. Citizens Bank Park doesn't have a whole let else to distinguish it from the average park. It's also situated a good distance away from downtown Philadelphia, so only fans at the top of the upper concourse can get a really good view of the city.

Progressive Field was heralded as one of the finest ballparks in the majors when it first opened. Unfortunately, it just simply has been overtaken by many others in the two decades since. Again, there’s nothing particularly wrong with it. But neither is it particularly interesting or distinctive. There are too many suites along the third-base line, pushing the upper deck higher than it needs to be. The view of downtown Cleveland is perfectly fine, though hardly jaw-dropping.

MLB's newest ballpark received widespread criticism for looking like a warehouse from the outside, but the interior salvages its ranking thanks to the team's effort to bring fans "closer to the action." Stacked upper decks make fans feel like they're sitting right over the players. Also, this is one stadium where the retractable roof was done right. No stadium roof should draw the eye of spectators, let them stay focused on what's going on down on the field.

Home runs aside, this is a really nice ballpark. It’s a true retro park, brick and steel, and it fits right in with the old buildings in downtown Denver. The Rockies did build the park too big, a reaction to the ridiculous crowds they drew in their first two seasons of existence at Mile High Stadium, so they tore down the third deck in right field and converted it to a party zone. Don’t worry, though, you’ll still find the vast majority of the purple row of seats in the upper deck, so designated to mark 5,280 feet above sea level.

This is a really, really nice ballpark in a very nice city. The limestone backstop and wall next to the left-field foul pole are great touches, as well as the overhanging upper decks in the outfield that make the place feel like something of a cauldron and, of course, the great Twins logo high above center field, with Mr. Minneapolis and Mr. Saint Paul shaking hands across the Mississippi River.

Though the basic foundation of the stadium opened nearly 50 years ago, it was gutted and rebuilt in the ’90s, so it doesn’t feel at all like an old ballpark. The rocky waterfall in left field gives this park some character. This is just a pleasant place to watch a ballgame. The weather is usually fantastic. The stands are usually packed and Disneyland is only five minutes away. What more do you need?

The view of the Gateway Arch alone is enough to distinguish this park from others across baseball, even though the ballpark itself is pretty bland. The thing is, Cardinals fans are among the most passionate in the sport. This stadium caters to them in that it focuses the attention on the field rather than stuffing the concourse with attractions. For that, Busch Stadium lands among the top half of the league in these rankings.

Marlins Park got a bad rap for leaning too far into Miami-style art when it first opened. However, since Derek Jeter and Co. assumed ownership of the franchise, the horrendous home run statue in center field has been removed and the bright orange and green colors around the park have been replaced with a more muted blue. What's left is still a memorable ballpark that could start to see an uptick in attendance with the Marlins making the playoffs in 2020.

Citi Field was a much-needed upgrade over the Mets' old ballpark Shea Stadium. The stadium itself is a retro-style layout with modern flair, highlighted by blue and orange dominating much of the structure. Navigating the ballpark is a bit confusing with escalators separating different concourses. But there are great views of the field all over the park that almost makes you forget that you're hearing planes take off at the nearby LaGuardia Airport every few minutes.

Perhaps the most under-appreciated ballpark in the majors, Kauffman Stadium is an anomaly. Built in the early ’70s when so many cookie-cutter, multi-purpose stadiums opened, it is a baseball-only ballpark that has stood the test of time quite well. The Royals did some renovations a few years ago, including the removal of some of the famed fountains beyond the outfield fence, but the place didn’t need a whole lot of work. It may be 41 years old, but it’s still a great place to watch a ballgame, and testament to some smart design from a couple generations ago.

How do you replace the most famous ballpark in baseball history, one that played host to so many iconic moments in the sport’s history over eight decades? Well, the Yankees decided to build a near-replica of the old place, right across the street. Except they made it bigger, more lavish and way more expensive. While there's no way the new stadium can completely replicate the old, the new Yankee Stadium still provides a decent venue to watch a ballgame. The redone Monument Park in centerfield is a must see.

For starters, you’re in San Diego, so it’s hard to go wrong, no matter what the place looks like. But the Padres did a fantastic job designing and building Petco Park, which combines modern niceties with some old-fashioned flair. For example, the Western Metal Supply Co. building, one corner of which serves as the left-field foul pole. The neighboring Gaslamp District has also been completely revitalized, a bustling corner of downtown San Diego that offers no shortage of places to go before and after Padres games.

We've now moved into the top six, which really is a tier of its own in that all six parks have strong cases for the No. 1 spot on these rankings. Oracle Park is no exception, with a beautiful backdrop of the San Francisco Bay that is close enough for home run balls to land in. The outfield dimensions make the ballpark a little too pitcher-friendly, but that's just nit-picking. It would be impossible to have a bad time watching a baseball game at this stadium.

The original retro ballpark remains one of the very best. So many other parks built in the ’90s and ’00s tried to duplicate Camden Yards, but none truly could, for one good reason: the warehouse. It already existed, so the ballpark was built around it. You can’t fabricate something like that. It has to be organic. It’s remarkable to think it’s been 27 years since Camden Yards opened and completely changed the notion of the modern sports facility. It is starting to show its age just a bit, but it remains a gem, often imitated, never duplicated.

Arguably the most historic stadium in sports, Fenway Park is about the experience, not the amenities. And it’s a wholly unique experience, well worth it. The Green Monster hovers over everything. Sure, there are obstructed seats. You'll feel cramped, and if you are not from Boston, you will be sick of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline and every New Englander by the end of the night. But Fenway is one of the coolest places to watch any sporting event, and you'll be glad you got to experience a place that has so much baseball history. It's a must for any baseball fan.

This is as close to a perfect ballpark as you can get. It has everything: An unmatched vista of downtown Pittsburgh beyond the Allegheny River, the Roberto Clemente Bridge ushering fans back and forth, an intimate seating bowl with only two decks (the first ballpark built with fewer than three decks since Milwaukee’s County Stadium in the 1950s) and just enough quirks to make games there distinct without threatening the quality of play.

To step into the Friendly Confines is to step back in time. That can be bad in some cases (try sitting way under the overhang and directly behind a pole, or try navigating your way through the rustic concourse) but the good far significantly outweighs the bad. There simply is nothing like a Chicago summer afternoon spent in the bleachers at the corner of Clark and Addison. The ivy. The manual scoreboard. The rooftops. In terms of pure experience, this is arguably the best in baseball.

Dodger Stadium has everything you could possibly want in an MLB ballpark. The scenic view of Chavez Ravine paints a breathtaking backdrop of the center field councourse, which has two medium-sized jumbotrons instead of one that dominates half the outfield. It's a huge stadium, but includes stacked concourses that don't put many fans too far away from the field. Even the grass seems greener in L.A., creating a masterpiece of a ballpark that has withstood the test of time for decades and should continue to again moving forward.
