In his 16th spring training with the Washington Nationals, Ryan Zimmerman has hit another dinger. In his first at bat on Monday against St. Louis, Zimmerman hit a deep drive off Cardinals’ RHP John Gant to put the Nationals up 2-0 in the first inning.
It was Zim’s third home run of spring training and brought his RBI total up to seven. Apart from his seemingly ageless level of athleticism, what makes Zimmerman’s current tear so immaculate is the fact that Zimmerman is not a fan of spring training.
‘Mr. National,’ as he’s known around the nation’s capital for his now 17-season tenure with the Nats, has been a longstanding enemy of spring training. He has skipped preseason games down in the Sunshine State before, noting that it’ll help him avoid later-season injuries and exhaustion.
Notwithstanding his dislike of spring training, Zimmerman is in the midst of hitting streak, especially for a 36-year-old. He opened the 2021 campaign homering against the Astros, hit another dinger three days later against the Mets, and has now hit his third home run in 11 at bats.
The Nationals host the New York Mets for Opening Day on April 1st. Hopefully Mr. National will continues his hot streak once games count for real.
