This Saturday’s Nationals game will look a bit different than Opening Day at empty Nationals Park, as FOX Sports announced thousands of virtual fans will be in attendance.

The defending World Series champs are scheduled to play the second of two games against the New York Yankees, starting Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Beginning this weekend, the network announced virtual fans and fake crowd noise will appear during live broadcasts throughout the 2020 MLB season. FOX announced that the elevated viewing experience is made possible by Silver Spoon Animation which uses cutting-edge Pixatope software to customize virtual fans appearance and movement to look like real people.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the league announced a shortening of the 2020 season where all teams will play 60 games as opposed to the regular 162-game schedule.
While it's not the same as having real spectators in attendance, the virtual fans will hopefully add some normalcy to the viewership experience.
