This year's NBA free agent class does not have the star power we have seen in recent offseasons. With Anthony Davis likely re-signing in L.A., no superstars are set to be available.
That's good news for the players who are free agents, as they could receive more attention and more money than they would in another year. Wizards sharpshooter Davis Bertans, for instance, could stand to benefit.
Most 2020 NBA free agent rankings have him in the top-10, or close to it. But a new list released by ESPN has him much higher than that.
Analyst Kevin Pelton has Bertans as the No. 5 player and that's with Davis and Brandon Ingram, a restricted free agent, ahead of him. Given both of those guys are very likely to remain with their teams, this essentially means Bertans is the third-best free agent in this year's class, according to Pelton.
No. 3 is very high praise. Consider the fact last year the No. 3 free agent on most lists was either Kyrie Irving or Jimmy Butler. Ahead of them were Kawhi Leonard and Kevin Durant and behind them were other really good players like Kemba Walker and Tobias Harris.
Many do not see Bertans as a top-three free agent in this class with other outlets ranking players like Danilo Gallinari, Montrezl Harrell and Gordon Hayward above him. But all it takes is one or two teams with money to see Bertans the same way and it could drive his price up.
The Wizards have made re-signing Bertans their No. 1 offseason priority and they have his Bird Rights, meaning they can exceed the salary cap with his new deal. But there will be teams with deep pockets showing interest, as NBC Sports Washington has reported. Set to go after him are the Hawks, Knicks and Suns.
The Wizards, though again, really want to keep Bertans. In about a month or so, we'll see if they can.
