The Patriot Center is no more.
The name, that is. George Mason University and EagleBank announced a multimillion-dollar strategic partnership that includes an agreement to change the name of the Patriot Center to EagleBank Arena at George Mason University.
Opened on Oct. 4, 1985, the 10,000-seat arena on the Fairfax campus is home to the Mason men’s and women’s basketball teams, not to mention concerts and other events.
The arrangement with EagleBank "has the potential to be a 20-year deal and provide the university with value of up to $13.75 million," according to the school. The first 10 years are guaranteed with support from EagleBank of $6.6 million. The new name becomes official on July 1.
“This incredible commitment from EagleBank will serve as a tremendous catalyst for the continued strengthening of the national and international reputation of George Mason basketball, the Atlantic 10 Conference and the university,” Mason Athletic Director Brad Edwards said.
New men's basketball coach Dave Paulsen took over that role following the 2014-15 season. Therefore he'll never have a chance to be the winningest coach under the Patriot Center name, but he noted a different upside via Twitter.
With announcement of Eagle Bank Arena, I can lay claim to undefeated record as #MasonNation coach in Patriot Center!
