No. 6 University of Maryland faces off against no. 11 Belmont University in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament on Thursday, March 21 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Belmont Bruins beat the Temple Owls 81-70 in the First Four on Tuesday night, securing their spot in the first round to compete against the Terps.
Maryland exited the Big Ten Tournament with an early loss to Nebraska, so the Terps' first round match-up will be the team's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in two years. In 2017, the Terps were eliminated in the Round of 68 by the Xavier Musketeers.
Maryland finished its 2018-19 season 22-10 under head coach Mark Turgeon, and this is Maryland's third Tournament appearance under him.
Belmont is making its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance under Rick Byrd, who won his 805th career game, and first in the NCAA Tournament, with the victory over Temple.
Belmont finished the regular season 27-5 but lost to Murray State in the finals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. Like the Terps, the Bruins also received an at-large bid.
