NCAA Tournament 2019: Virginia vs. Oregon Sweet 16, time, TV channel, how to watch

Despite a short scare during the first half of their first round matchup against No. 16 seed Gardner-Webb, No. 1 seed Virginia picked up two wins during the first weekend of the 2019 NCAA Tournament to earn a trip to the Sweet 16. Now, the Cavaliers will look to continue their journey toward a National Championship against the No. 12 seeded Oregon Ducks.

For Virginia, a halftime deficit against Gardner-Webb in the South Region round of 64 game had many feeling like they were experiencing deja vu dating back to last years shocking loss to UMBC. However, the Cavaliers soon returned to form to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs 71-56. Virginia then followed that up with a 63-51 win over No. 9 Oklahoma to advance to the Sweet 16.

The common theme in both of Virginia's NCAA Tournament victories was defense, something that should come as no surprise following the Cavaliers dominant performance on that end of the floor all season long. Holding opponents to around 55 ppg entering the tournament, Virginia continues to stifle offenses.

Now, they'll face one of the hottest offenses, and teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament. After upsetting their way to a Pac-12 Tournament championship and an automatic bid, the No. 12 Oregon Ducks find themselves as the only double-digit seed remaining in the dance. Oregon picked up dominating wins over No. 5 Wisconsin 72-54 and No. 13 UC Irvine 73-54 to advance to the second weekend.

With length and a balanced scoring attack led by Payton Pritchard and Louis King, Oregon has the recipe to contend with one of the top teams left in this year's tournament.

Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder was looking forward to catching Virginia in a more vulnerable state when the Monarchs added the Cavaliers to their schedule.

"I was really hoping when we scheduled this game three years ago that they wouldn't be this good if I'm being 100% truthful," Wilder said earlier this week about ODU's game Saturday night at No. 21 Virginia. "But I've been upstairs all morning studying them. They are a really good football team."

The Monarchs face an uphill battle to make headlines with an upset of the Cavaliers.

Virginia (3-0) is looking for its best start since 2004 when the Cavaliers won their first five games of the season. The Monarchs (1-1), in just their 11st season since reinstituting the football program, are coming of a 31-17 loss at Virginia Tech two weeks ago.

An early bye may have allowed ODU to prepare a few surprises for Virginia, but Wilder isn't sure.

"I think they are a complete football team," Wilder said, "and what I mean by that is they are solid in all aspects."

The Cavaliers are coming off a 31-24 victory against Florida State in a game they trailed for much of the contest. But Virginia fans were out in force for the matchup. The crowd -- 57,826 -- was the largest for the Cavaliers at home since Notre Dame visited to start the 2015 season.

"I was thrilled with the attendance and the support we received in our stadium," coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "Clearly made a difference for our team."

This may be the first-ever meeting between the James Madison and Chattangooga football programs on Saturday afternoon, but the Dukes will have fond memories of a 2004 I-AA National Championship victory over Montana at the same venue.

James Madison enter the contest 2-1, bouncing back from an opening loss to West Virginia with easy wins over St. Francis (PA) and Morgan State. When the Dukes travel to Tennessee, however, they'll be expecting more of a fight.

Chattanooga comes in 1-2 and will be looking to bounce back from the 45-0 demolition from FBS neighbors Tennessee.
