Freshman wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. may be one of the youngest members of Virginia’s receiving corps, but neither his size nor his production would’ve indicated he was making his first career start Saturday against Duke.
With the Cavaliers trailing 20-17 early in the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-7 receiver tried to make a juggling 27-yard catch that was ruled incomplete on replay; he responded with a 39-yard catch before later pulling in an 18-yard tightly contested touchdown grab that gave UVA the lead.
Davis Jr. would score again on Virginia’s next drive, putting Duke away to give the Cavaliers a season-opening win. The freshman finished with four catches for a game-high 101 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cavaliers will carry their 1-0 record into next week’s matchup against No. 1 Clemson, who they last faced in the ACC championship game last winter.
