Orioles lose third straight

Miguel Gonzalez knew it wasnt his night. After the first pitch of the game, he trailed by a run. After the first inning, he trailed by five.Game over.Gonzalez was facing David Price, who doesnt give up many runs at all, and by the time he left the game in the third inning, the Orioles were trailing 7-1.His awful start sent the Orioles to their third straight defeat, 10-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays before 19,582 at Oriole Park on Wednesday.Gonzalezs line was frightful: 2 23 innings, seven runs, seven hits, two walks, two home runs and three hit batsmen. I didnt have my stuff tonight, Gonzalez said. He knew quickly it wasnt his night.I think it was the first inning. I couldnt get my command. Obviously, whatever happened didnt work out of me. I just want to forget about tonights game. That would be a good idea.He had two excellent starts, and a loss to the Tigers Justin Verlander. This one, Gonzalez didnt try to explain away.Just mentally I wasnt there tonight, Gonzalez said. I was just trying to get back into the game after that home run, but it just didnt happen.Desmond Jennings leadoff home run was the second in as many home starts for Gonzalez (2-2). He became the first pitcher in club history to allow leadoff home runs in his initial two home starts.Manager Buck Showalter decided Taylor Teagarden would catch Gonzalez, and he watched as five straight batters reached base after two were out, including consecutive hit batters. His command was just a little bit off tonight. He was kind of getting deeper in the first inning where weve got to get outs, and we just couldnt get them right then and there, Teagarden said. After about two or three batters of that, they started capitalizing, and all the damage was done. The Orioles (51-47) are now tied with the Rays (51-47), but after last weeks five-game winning streak, confidence was building that a sustained playoff push was possible. Now, things are bordering on the dire, and its possible that Brian Matusz will replace Gonzalez in the rotation. Matusz allowed a run and three hits in eight innings for Norfolk on Wednesday night.J.J. Hardy drove in the Orioles only run when he scored Nick Markakis from second on a first-inning single. Markakis led off against Price (14-4) with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.Price won his major league-leading 14th, pitching seven innings, allowing a run and seven hits. He struck out 10 and walked none.In the third, Ryan Roberts, who was acquired on Tuesday night from Arizona, hit a two-run home run for a 7-1 lead. If we could have held it at 5-1 and not created such a margin of error for him, who knows what would have happened? Showalter said. But you knew you were going to have to pitch a lot of innings out of your bullpen again.Showalter used five relievers, and after the game, he conceded the team may need another arm in the bullpen. The Orioles continued to flail away at the plate. They struck out 13 times, and have fanned 23 times in the first two games of the series. Its getting to the point in the season where guys are a little tired, being run out there every day. There are going to be stretches where strikeout numbers are a little up, Teagarden said. Its not fun to see. Youd like to see guys put the ball in play, but this teams got some thump. Weve got some guys in the middle of the lineup that hit the long ball. Its going to happen.Matt Wieters was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and is now 1-for-27.Were all frustrated, Hardy said. We want to come through for the team, but weve had stretches with every team Ive been on, it seems like we are always having this conversation at some point during the seasonand well get out of it. Lobaton added a three-run home run in the fifth off Matt Lindstrom, his first major league home run, to make it 10-1.NOTES:-Gonzalez is the first pitcher to allow leadoff home runs in his first two home starts since Colorados Chin-Hui Tsao in 2003, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.-The Orioles hit four batters for the first time since June 19, 2003.-Jim Gilbert, a longtime Orioles scout, died on Monday at 82 in Hagerstown, Md. Gilbert was also manager of the Oriolelanders, a team of area players sponsored by the Orioles.-The Orioles play Tampa Bay at 12:35 p.m. on Thursday. Chris Tillman (2-1, 1.15) will face James Shields (7-4, 3.00).
