Player Notes:

ORIOLES:

Starting pitcher David Hess surrendered six runs on eight hits in just two-plus innings of work Wednesday, falling to 1-3 on the season and raising his ERA to 5.57. The Rays crushed three homers off the 25-year-old, including back-to-back bombs in the third inning.

Center fielder Cedric Mullins' cold start to the season continued Wednesday, going 0-for-3 in the loss. He's now batting just .098 in 51 at-bats this season.

Chris Davis was left out of Baltimore's starting lineup for the second straight game due to illness. Renato Nunez started at first base in his place Wednesday, with Trey Mancini as the designated hitter.

The Orioles activated catcher Austin Wynns from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk Wednesday. In four minor league rehab games before being activated, Wynns went 5-for-17 with two doubles and four RBI.

RAYS:

The Tampa Bay lineup teed off on Orioles pitching Wednesday night. Second baseman Brandon Lowe went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, third baseman Yandy Diaz also homered and doubled and catcher Mike Zunino collected three hits and drove in a run.

Reliever Yonny Chirinos went five scoreless innings to pick up the win against Baltimore, his third of the season. Chrinos allowed just one hit and one walk after relieving Ryne Stanek following the first inning.

Right-hander Hunter Wood will start Thursday against the Orioles, acting as Tampa Bay's opener.

Blake Snell played catch and reportedly threw from 90 feet away Wednesday, a day after the reigning AL Cy Young winner was placed on the 10-day injured list with a toe injury.

Second baseman Joey Wendle played five innings in an extended spring training game Wednesday, collecting two hits. If all goes well, Wendle could be back with the Rays by the end of the weekend.
