Orioles likely to face Yankees new ace Gerrit Cole on Opening Day 2020

Orioles likely to face Yankees new ace Gerrit Cole on Opening Day 2020

The Orioles will likely face the Yankees' newest acquisition, free agent Gerrit Cole, on Opening Day at Camden Yards. As the Yankees' newest ace, Cole lines up to make his first regular-season appearance in a New York jersey on March 26.

The former Astro signed with the Yankees a week prior for a record-breaking $324 million over nine years, eclipsing the record set less than 48 hours earlier by Stephen Strasburg ($245 million for seven years).

Cole was one of the top free agents of the 2019-2020 offseason; Cole threw a 2.50 ERA in 2019, with a 20-5 record and 326 strikeouts. In his one game against Baltimore, he held the Orioles to a .143 average, though they scored three runs and Chance Sisco homered once.

Opening Day at Camden Yards on March 26 will pit the best record in the AL East in 2019 (103-59) against the worst record in the division (54-108).

If you're a fan of the Orioles, or a baseball fan in general, the MyTeams app has good news for you.

Much like Baltimore is undergoing a rebuild, the MyTeams app also added a new prospect of its own: the Orioles card, which can be added to your list of favorite teams and help you keep up with the latest news. Here's how to add it:

1. Make sure you have the MyTeams app (which is available in the App store and on Google play).

2. You can add the card by using the navigational button to swipe over to "Settings".

3. Once in settings click on "Edit/Reorder Teams".

From there you should see the Ravens under the Washington teams. The team will not appear in your carousel list unless you save it to your teams.

Orioles claim Andrew Velazquez off waivers, DFA Richard Urena

Orioles claim Andrew Velazquez off waivers, DFA Richard Urena

The Orioles made another roster move Wednesday, claiming infielder Andrew Velazquez off waivers from the Indians. The team also designated infielder Richard Urena for assignment in a corresponding move.

Velazquez, 25, is an infielder that can play all over the diamond. He played 13 games with the Rays in 2018 and 15 total games with the Rays and Indians in 2019. In his 28 career major league games, he’s slashed .152/.222/.242 and has zero home runs.

Last season, Velazquez hit .083 and went just 2-for-23 during his at-bats. He’s also played third base, second base, shortstop and all three outfield positions in the major league.

Urena was claimed on Jan. 10 off waivers from the Blue Jays. Last season in Toronto, Urena played 30 games and slashed .243/.273/.324 and had zero home runs and four RBIs. He played five positions last season in Toronto, not including an inning where he was a pitcher.

Should Urena clear waivers, he would stay in camp and the roster would grow to 69 total players.
