Orioles finally stopped 19-game losing streak to Yankees

The Baltimore Orioles secured their first win over the New York Yankees since March 31, 2019 Friday night. Finally.

Rookie Ryan Mountcastle led the O’s in snapping their 19-game losing streak to the Yankees with home run and three RBIs in the second game of a doubleheader Friday.

The Orioles fell in Game 1 of the doubleheader after third baseman Miguel Andujar singled in the tiebreaking run top of the ninth inning while Clint Frazier added an RBI single giving New York a 6-5 win.

That ending is par for the course in a rivalry that has been anything but for a few years now. The Orioles - now four years removed from a sustained stretch of baseball excellence where they made the playoffs three times in six seasons - were 7-12 against New York in an otherwise miserable 47-win season in 2018. Ok - that's ... something.

But in 2019, Baltimore took two of three from New York at Yankee Stadium to open the season and promptly lost every single time the two teams met after that. That streak continued with three losses this season, including the early game Friday night, until the Orioles finally won one.

The whole streak is epitomized by Yankees star Gleyber Torres' stats against the O's: 16 home runs in 31 games dating to 2018 with 31 RBI and a 1.266 OPS. Those are Little League numbers. And, for New York, it's been like playing a Little League team.

Following the O’s nightcap win, manager Brandon Hyde said “we've had a tough time against them. They're a tough club. Game 1 was disappointing because we had opportunities, and we've had opportunities against them in the past.''

This losing streak couldn't end soon enough for Baltimore and let this be a lesson to all the haters, no one beats the O’s 20 times in a row. Saturday night? It's time to start a winning streak of their own.
