The Baltimore Orioles will pick up José Iglesias' $3.5 million club option for the 2021 season, the team announced on Sunday.
Iglesias, 30, was a surprise star for Baltimore during the shortened 2020 season. The shortstop hit .373 with a .400 on-base percentage and 1.2 WAR in 39 games. Iglesias signed with Baltimore as a free agent in January of 2020.
While the Orioles are beginning a youth movement as the team looks to get back into contention, it appears that the team finds Iglesias' experience and skill to be worth keeping around for at least 2021.
As of now, the Orioles have declined the options of Bryan Holaday and Wade LeBlanc, making them free agents. More decisions on pending free agents will continue to trickle out in the coming days.
