Orioles Roundup: O's drop series opener in Oakland

The Baltimore Orioles are now on a six-game losing streak after dropping the opening game of their series 3-2 to the Oakland Athletics.

Here's the lastest news on the Orioles, who are now 21-51:

Player Notes

ORIOLES:

After missing his previous start against the Red Sox with a "hot spot" on his right middle finger, pitcher Andrew Cashner allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, over six innings on Monday night. In the outing, Cashner gave up four hits and allowed a walk, while striking out two batters. He was not helped by the Orioles' defense, who allowed two unearned runs. Cashner's ERA drops to 4.48 with a 27/11 K/BB ratio and a 1.34 WHIP over 76 1/3 innings.

Hanser Alberto went 1-for-2 with an RBI on Monday night. In the second inning, his RBI gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead on a safety squeeze. Alberto added a single in the seventh inning. The second baseman has displayed some strong play recently and is hitting .312/.329/.385 with three home runs and 20 RBI over 205 at-bats this season.

Dwight Smith Jr. (concussion) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. He is slated to play two games for Norfolk, and if all goes well, the outfielder should rejoin the Orioles on Thursday in Seattle.

The Orioles have purchased the contract of LHP Sean Gilmartin from Triple-A Norfolk. He holds a 2.48 ERA and 40/11 K/BB ratio over 36 1/3 innings for Norfolk this year. Although Gilmartin has been used mostly in relief over the last few years, he does have plenty of starting experience.

With Gilmartin coming up, OF Joey Rickard has been designated for assignment. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Gilmartin. Rickard is a .245/.299/.372 hitter over his four-year career in the majors and likely has a good chance of clearing waivers.

ATHLETICS:

Mike Fiers allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings on Monday night. The right-hander only gave up three hits, while striking out four and walking two. Fiers has gone at least six innings in six consecutive games for the A's and has not allwed more than three runs in any start since April 20.

Marcus Semien went 1-for-2 and scored two runs on Monday night. The shortstop reached based three times, increasing his OBP to .365. Simien is also averaging .280 on the season with a .443 slugging mark. He is currently on a 14-game hitting streak.

Blake Treinen threw a hitless ninth inning with a strikeout on Monday night to pick up the save. The outing saw his season totals rise to 36 stiekouts over 35 1/3 innings, while his ERA dropped 3.31 with 16 saves in 18 chances.
