Omarr Smith has been named the first head coach of the new Baltimore AFL franchise, owned by Ted Leonsis and Monumental Sports & Entertainment. The team will play home games at Royal Farms Arena. Its name and branding will be unveiled in January. 

Smith comes from the LA Kiss, where he led the team to a home playoff appearance in 2016 as head coach. 

“Omarr is a proven winner in the AFL,” Leonsis said of the new hire. “He has seven ArenaBowl Championships under his belt as a player and coach and commands tremendous respect from AFL players and coaches. We are pleased to have a coach of his caliber lead our team.” 

While coach Smith admitted to never having visited Baltimore prior to his intoductory press conference, he voiced excitement at being a part of the city's sports experience. 

"I am extremely honored and humbled to become the head coach of the Baltimore AFL team,” Smith said. “There are tremendous sports fans in Baltimore, and I believe they will embrace the fun, exciting style of football that is the hallmark of the AFL."

The Baltimore AFL franchise, while under the same ownership as the Washington Valor, will serve as a rival just up I-95. Both teams will play their inaugural seasons in 2017.
