The Ravens made a lot of noise Thursday morning and traded for Yannick Ngakoue to boost the pass rush. Then, reports surfaced they’re set to bring in wide receiver Dez Bryant to join the practice squad.
But one player who likely won’t see any time in a Ravens uniform is Antonio Brown, per a report from Josina Anderson.
Rumors about the Ravens’ interest in Brown swirled all offseason, especially once pictures and videos surfaced of quarterback Lamar Jackson working out with Brown in Florida.
“I’d be happy if they signed him,” Jackson said in April. “He’s a great player. He showed it each and every year when he was with the Steelers in the past, but it’s not my decision.”
Brown is also cousins with second-year wideout Marquise Brown, which only fueled the fire.
But according to Anderson, the Ravens are likely to pass on bringing in the 32-year-old four-time All-Pro, who is currently under league suspension until after Week 8 that stems from violations of the league’s personal conduct policy. He is eligible to sign with any time after that period has expired.
Antonio Brown played one game for the Patriots last season before being released after he sent threatening text messages to a former trainer, Britney Taylor, who previously accused him of rape and sexual assault. Additionally, on June 12 of this year, Brown pleaded no contest to felony burglary of a vehicle, misdemeanor battery, and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
The league is still continuing its investigation on the sexual assault lawsuit.
Of the teams reportedly interested in Brown’s services, the Seahawks are seemingly the favorites. Quarterback Russell Wilson recently said the suspended wide receiver deserves another chance in the league.
While the Ravens have a need for a wide receiver as the trade deadline approaches, and with limited cap space, a move like that, on paper, makes sense. But with Antonio Brown’s case, it’s not simply a football question. If it were, he’d be on a roster right now.
So if Antonio Brown is to join the league once again, at least for the time being, it doesn’t appear he’ll do so as a Raven.
