Preseason NFL power rankings really just exist so people can look back at them and laugh and point and laugh more come the end of the season.
A couple of teams projected to be a disaster will somehow come together and reel off 10 wins. A few squads who should be surefire playoff contenders, meanwhile, will fall apart and end up near the top of the draft come April of next year.
With that being said, starting the year without power rankings is like starting the year without trying to convince yourself that your franchise has a real chance at the Super Bowl (which is actually true this time around as long as the refs don't blow it and the Patriots don't cheat). It just doesn't feel right.
So, before Week 1 kicks off, let's refresh ourselves on who the favorites are, who the bottom-dwellers are and why the Bills are back in their rightful spot near the bottom. It's time to check out the first edition of NBCSportsWashington.com's 2018 NFL power rankings, which look intelligent now but inevitably won't in five months.
