The Redskins need a new quarterback for the 2019 season. Colt McCoy should be able to return in 2019, but as more information comes out about Alex Smith, his return in 2019 does not seem like a realistic option.
The draft seems the logical way to go for Washington at quarterback, as the team already has more than $20 million tied up in the position on the salary cap for 2019. That means free agency probably won't be the route for the Redskins, but it doesn't mean the front office won't consider their options.
The tough part, however, is the market doesn't have much to offer.
Teddy Bridgewater seems like the best option on the market, but it's possible he sticks around in New Orleans. Right now, Bridgewater is backing up Drew Brees and has talked about how much he enjoys learning from the future Hall of Famer. There's also the possibility that Brees retires after this season, and if that happened, New Orleans might move quick to keep Bridgewater. His contract has terms for 2019 and 2020, but they are voidable years and no guaranteed cash. He will be a free agent, but if Bridgewater hits the market is another question.
Another name - Tyrod Taylor. He got replaced by Baker Mayfield in Cleveland and Taylor will not be getting that job back. As the starter in Buffalo two seasons ago, Taylor guided the Bills to a playoff berth. He doesn't take many chances down the field and has good wheels too. He could help, but won't be cheap.
What about Nick Foles?
The Eagles' Super Bowl hero might become a free agent in 2019, though there are some contractual proceedings required. If he does hit the market, he would likely bring a higher price tag than the Redskins really have room for, just because some team will remember his playoff run and Super Bowl performance and pay him based on that.
There aren't enough quarterbacks out there. That's the truth.
The Redskins don't have much room to pay a free agent quarterback. That's the truth.
Still, the Burgundy and Gold QB situation will require looking at all possible ways to get better. Free agency included.
