Redskins

Cutting rosters from 90 to 53 forces NFL teams to make tough decisions, and that included the Redskins. When the team announced its 53-man roster Saturday night, some fan favorites got left behind.

The good news for many of those players is the team was able to bring them back to its practice squad. Below is a list of nine players Washington signed to its practice squad, which keeps players in the organization, allows them to practice and take part in team meetings and functions.

Here's the Redskins current practice squad list:

  1. WR Cam Sims
  2. DL Ryan Bee
  3. CB Adonis Alexander
  4. TE JP Holtz
  5. RB Craig Reynolds
  6. WR Jehu Chesson
  7. S Jeremy Reaves
  8. T Timon Parris
  9. LB Darrell Williams

Sims made the Redskins active roster last season but immediately got hurt in the first game of the season in Arizona. He missed the remainder of the season on the injured reserve. Many expected Sims to make the active roster again this season, particularly after an impressive stretch during training camp in Richmond. His play in the preseason did not match that effort, however, and ultimately Robert Davis and Steven Sims got the final two receiver jobs on the 53.

Alexander made the roster last year also, and was active for nine games. He made a minimal impact, registering four tackles in those games. Holtz got promoted late last year but was not active in a game. Of all the practice squad players, Chesson has made the most impact in an NFL game for Washington as a special teams standout.

Looking at the current practice squad group, don't be surprised if Reaves gets the first look at game action. As a safety, that position group is the thinnest, with just four players at the position on the active roster.

If a player on the active roster gets hurt, the Redskins can promote somebody from the practice squad to take their spot. Keep in mind, however, another team can pluck players off the practice squad but that team must give the practice squad player an active roster spot. The Redskins have one spot remaining on their practice squad.

The team also announced that rookies Shaun Wilson and Jordan Brailford have been moved to the injured reserve, possibly setting both up for basically a redshirt year.
