NEW ORLEANS —The sad scene played out midway through the third quarter as Redskins running back Chris Thompson got carted off the Superdome field.
Thompson appeared to get rolled up on from behind by a Saints defender at the end of a Kirk Cousins run.
The injury looked bad in real time, and much worse on subsequent replays.
Most Washington players stood around Thompson as he got placed on the cart and the medical staff deployed a brace onto his lower right leg.

Thompson has been Washington's best offensive player this season.
Through nine games, he has accumulated more than 750 total yards and five touchdowns. Thompson leads the NFL in receiving yards by a running back.
Injuries have been hitting the Redskins hard this season, and it seems Thompson will miss significant time. FOX analyst Troy Aikman wondered if Thompson's season was all but over.
