Redskins

Redskins

The May 8th deadline for NFL teams to assign a free agent tender to players passed without any transaction reported on the league wire between the Redskins and cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

Now, what does that mean?

The Redskins made it clear late in the 2017 season the club intended to allow Bashaud Breeland walk as a free agent in the 2018 offseason. That plan looked complete when Breeland agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers during free agency, only a failed physical held up the deal. Breeland injured his foot on vacation, didn't disclose the injury, and the Panthers rescinded their offer.

That unique situation led to this unique situation where the Redskins might have used the free agent tender on Breeland.

What exactly is a free agent tender? It's a rarely used contractual device that allows a team to put a one-year offer on a player, and if the player signs elsewhere, the original club gets a compensatory pick. The timing is also key.

Selected by the Redskins in the fourth round of 2014, Breeland would have netted the Redskins a compensatory draft pick had he signed with the Panthers. After that deal flopped, and no other team signed Breeland, Washington's compensatory pick evaporated. Why? Because May 8th serves as the deadline for draft pick compensation, thus, the free agent tender deadline.

Here is the official NFL explanation:

Q. What determines an unrestricted free agent? A player with four or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired. He is free to sign with any club — with no draft choice compensation owed to his old club — through July 23 or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later. His negotiating rights revert exclusively to his old club if by May 8 the old club tendered the player a one-year contract for 110 percent of his prior year’s salary. His old club then has until the Tuesday following Week 10 of the regular season (Nov. 13) to sign him. If he does not sign by that date, he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by May 8, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season.

It's not clear why the Redskins wouldn't have used the tender in this situation. The terms of the deal would keep Breeland in Washington at a cost of about $1.2 million. That's significantly less than the three-year, $24 million deal that Breeland almost landed from the Panthers.

It is interesting, however, that Breeland hasn't signed elsewhere. The deal with Carolina fell apart nearly two months ago, and while the cornerback obviously has to rehab his foot injury, a look at his Instagram reveals no cast or brace on his feet.

On Twitter, Breeland looks like a player fired up to prove teams wrong for passing on him after the Panthers deal fell through.

In four seasons with the Redskins, Breeland has provided a little bit of everything. Well liked and funny in the locker room, Breeland played quite well in spots, but also had some personality clashes. When the team signed Josh Norman in free agency two seasons ago, Breeland voiced his displeasure with the move on social media. In training camp last summer, Breeland got thrown off the practice field after a heated argument. He also got in trouble for buying marijuana during training camp as a rookie.

Still, Breeland produced on the field and was largely durable. He missed just four games in four years.

There aren't enough good cornerbacks in the NFL. Breeland is good.

Some team will sign him, and the Redskins won't get anything in return when he leaves. After letting the tender deadline pass, it appears the organization is fine with that.
