Kirk Cousins' tweet welcomes Josh Doctson to his new team and -- wait, what year is it?

Just a few years ago, the potential Kirk Cousins-to-Josh Doctson connection was something that Redskins fans may have assumed they would see for years to come. It's something that could still be seen in 2019, just not in the Burgundy and Gold.

After being cut earlier this week, Doctson has found a new home in Minnesota, as the Vikings announced the signing of the fourth-year veteran receiver on Tuesday.

Quick to welcome the former first-round pick to his new team was a familiar face in Kirk Cousins.

Cousins, who spent his first six seasons in Washington before signing with Minnesota last offseason, has two years of prior work with Doctson. During the two campaigns, Doctson compiled 37 receptions for 568 yards and six touchdowns.

Now back together on the Vikings, Cousins and company will hope to get more out of Doctson than what he showed in three seasons with the Redskins. Never able to live up to his draft position and take the step toward being a reliable target, Doctson's release was both a mild surprise and an understandable move.

The Redskins and Vikings are slated to match up against one another in Week 8 of the regular season. A Thursday night game and Cousins' first game against his former team, there were already plenty of storylines to follow. Now, we can add Doctson's name and situation to the drama.
