Five Redskins under pressure vs Cowboys
QB Kirk Cousins—It was noted here yesterday that the Redskins have not beaten the Cowboys in a meaningful game since Cousins became the starter in 2015. The only win came in the 2015 season finale with the Redskins locked into their playoff seed and the Cowboys long since eliminated. I don’t know if it’s a big monkey on his back but it’s safe to say everyone in the fan base and in the organization is happier when the Redskins beat Dallas.
RT Morgan Moses—Demarcus Lawrence, second in the NFL in sacks with 11.5, primarily lines up on the left side of the defense, which matches him up with Moses most of the game. Although Lawrence has been quiet lately, he tends to get his sacks in bunches, so Moses will need to keep him down.
LB Zach Brown—Even with Zeke out, the Cowboys are still going to try to run the ball as long as the score allows them to. Brown will need to add to his league-leading totals of 110 tackles and 11 tackles for a loss to make sure the Cowboys don’t get the running game going which could, in turn, get Dak Prescott on one of his hot streaks.
OLB Preston Smith—The other way to keep Prescott from getting hot is to get heat on him. Smith had a sack in each of the first four games, half a sack in the fifth and none since. He has put some pressure on opposing QBs with 12 combined hits and hurries in the last five games. Smith is due and it would be good if he can get home once or twice against Prescott.
CB Josh Norman—Dez Bryant isn’t the threat he used to be but they still have to cover him. If Norman can match up with him one on one and take him out of the game, and if Bashaud Breeland can blanket him when he’s on the other side, life will get even more difficult for Prescott. He has attempted 347 passes this year and 103 of those have been targeted to Bryant. If Norman can help remove Bryant as an option, Prescott will have a very difficult time.
