Here is what you need to know on this Monday, April 30, 11 days before the Washington Redskins hold their rookie minicamp.
Projecting the 53-man roster—Offense
Sure, it’s too early to project the Redskins’ 53-man roster but that has never stopped me before. Before a single OTA or training camp practice is held, here is my look at who I think will make it on offense; defense up tomorrow.
Quarterbacks (3)
Alex Smith, Colt McCoy, Kevin Hogan
Hogan isn’t a lock but if he shows any promise at all they will keep him around as a possible QB2 in 2019.
Running backs (4)
Derrius Guice, Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, Rob Kelley
This is the first area where there will be a numbers crunch. They might like to keep Kapri Bibbs but will Jay Gruden be willing to move on from Kelley to do it? For that matter, will they keep four running backs or go with three plus a couple on the practice squad? Once they settle on who makes the team, will the rookie Guice line up the first snap of the season or will he have to earn the job?
Wide receivers (5)
Josh Doctson, Paul Richardson, Jamison Crowder, Maurice Harris, Robert Davis
They could keep six receivers with seventh-round pick Trey Quinn competing with Brian Quick for the final spot. Davis and Harris also could be pushed hard by Quick and Quinn. In other words, it’s a fluid situation.
Tight ends (3)
Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Jeremy Sprinkle
The Redskins did not draft a tight end or sign one in free agency so there seems to be faith that Reed will be healthy. Yeah, we’ve heard that before. They went with four here last year, but it doesn’t look like they will replace the departed Niles Paul.
Offensive line (9)
Trent Williams, Arie Kouandjio, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe, Geron Christian, Tyler Catalina, Tony Bergstrom
I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with 10 here after all of the injury problems here last year. Perhaps the tenth will be a veteran interior lineman brought in to compete with Kouandjio for the starting left guard job. There also is the possibility that Nsekhe is the starter a left guard and Christian is elevated to being the primary backup for Williams and Moses.
Rookies (2): Guice, Christian
New to the organization in 2018 (5): Rookies plus Smith, Hogan, Richardson
