Redskins

Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, June 30, 26 days before the Washington Redskins start training camp.

The Redskins week that was

A look at some of the most popular posts and hottest topics of the week on Real Redskins  and NBC Sports Washington.

Redskins stock watch—Three up, three down—It’s funny how things can work out to the detriment of a player’s career. The Redskins were in agreement with many scouts and analysts that Tim Settle would have been a decent choice in the third round and a good value in the fourth. The Redskins had no plans to add another nose tackle after drafting Daron Payne in the first round but when Settle was still there with the 163rdpick went on the clock they couldn’t pass him up. That was bad news for Hood, who went from being the sixth DL on the roster to the seventh. Given that the Redskins usually only keep six D-linemen, Hood’s job is very much in jeopardy.

What’s the outlook for the Redskins’ secondary in 2018? Lost in how bad the Redskins’ rushing defense was last year is the fact that the pass defense was pretty strong. And that statement made after measuring just pass yards allowed, which can be skewed by the fact that it was so easy to run against Washington. They were sixth in passing DVOA, which is independent of the number of pass attempts against them. Still, many are concerned about replacing Kendall Fuller. He was a good slot corner, no doubt. But a year ago many fans were terrified at the thought of Fuller as the No. 1 slot corner. Someone will emerge, maybe not as good a Fuller but competent.

Lack of respect is mounting for both Smith and the Redskins—Certainly, we don’t know for sure how well Alex Smith will perform for the Redskins. But there is a wide gap between what many in the local media think about Smith’s transition and what the oddsmakers think.

Can Derrius Guice top 1,000 yards rushing as a rookie? In this post, I gave Guice about a 25 percent chance of gaining 1,000 yards this season. Many fans disagreed, saying that he is a slam dunk to break 1K. He certainly has a shot, especially if the Redskins have a good number of late leads to protect.

Tweet of the week

All I’ll say here is that it will be great to have some actual events to write about. I’m sure that regular readers here agree. While it’s fun and challenging to write about different topics, I’d much rather have to prioritize several news items.
