RICHMOND—Here is what you need to know on Saturday, August 4, five days before the Washington Redskins open up their preseason at New England.

The Redskins week that was

A look at some of the most popular posts and hottest topics of the week on Real Redskins and NBC Sports Washington.

Thompson calls Guice 'childish' but in a positive way—I would have chosen a different word to the concept that Derrius Guice has a lot of child-like qualities. But who am I to tell Chris Thompson how to describe his teammate. Just read the post to see what he’s talking about and come up with your own word for it.

Redskins training camp practice report, Day 4—I’m doing these reports every day that there is practice on my iPad Pro from the sidelines at practice. It’s a lot of fun, check them out to follow along. On this particular day, which was last Sunday, we had what is so far the only scuffle of training camp, Alex Smith was very sharp, and the second- and third-team players participated in a 2018 version of the Oklahoma drill. Marty Schottenheimer would barely recognize it but it was still very lively and fun to watch.

WR Maurice Harris making his case for roster spot—It seems that Harris makes a great catch every day. He is hoping to avoid being let go when the team cuts to 53, something that happened to him each of the last two seasons.

Have the Redskins fixed their biggest problem area? That, of course, was stopping the run. They are going to throw nearly half a ton of talented linemen at the problem. Will it work? Check back in late October.

Tweet of the week

We are in a zone here where any injury to a wide receiver is going to have a segment of the fan base calling for the Redskins to sign Dez Bryant. That happened shortly after Josh Doctson went to the ground on Wednesday and left the field with an apparent injury to his left shoulder. Before any diagnoses, the tweets calling for the Redskins to sign Dez started to trend.

I don’t think that signing Bryant is a good idea because he is not nearly as good as he used to be and not good enough to make the high level of maintenance he requires worthwhile. But my opinion doesn't matter. The important thing is that, from what I have hear, the Redskins organization has no interest in signing Bryant. Perhaps that could change at some point but it’s going to take much more than an injury that might sideline Doctson for a few days for that to happen.

The agenda

Today: Fan appreciation day; Training camp practice 1:30; Walkthrough 4:40; players available after practice

Upcoming: Preseason opener Redskins @ Patriots (Aug. 9) 5 days; Final cut (Sept. 1) 28 days; Season opener @ Cardinals (Sept. 9) 36 days
