With the Washington football team's official retirement of the "Redskins" name and logo Monday, the search for a new name continues "in earnest."
Few are aware where the team is leaning for a new name, but we're at least able to find out where the fans stand on the potential options. Yahoo! Sports polled Washington fans on their preferred new name for the franchise, and the results came back with two notable suggestions leading the way.
Washington Redtails: 28%
Washington Warriors: 23%

One notable omission from the list would be a fan-favorite, and personal choice of a few former players, the Red Wolves. This might explain why "other" comes in third at 20% behind Warriors and Redtails.
The Redtails moniker originates from the Tuskegee Airmen, an all-Black fighter-pilot division of the American forces in World War 2. Their planes' tails were painted red, which would explain the name. This is quarterback Dwayne Haskins' favorite option.

Warriors could be one of the easier transitions for Washington to make. Although reports suggest the team will not use Native American imagery in their next logo, Warriors could still adapt some aspects of the old name and logo without having to change much.
Hogs of course, is inspired by Washington's dominant offensive line through the 1980s led by Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm, Mark May, Jon Bostic and the late Joe Bugel. Former Washington right tackle Jon Jansen is all for this name for obvious reasons.
Whichever name the team chooses will no doubt receive a positive reaction followed swiftly by outrage from those who never wanted the name changed to begin with. Like it or not, a change is coming, and if the fans have any say in the matter, it looks like there are three leading contenders.
