Former fourth-round pick Troy Apke had a tough rookie season in 2018, appearing in just two games for the Redskins and only recording one tackle.

Entering play in Week 7 against the 49ers, Apke had suited up for all six of Washington’s games but had yet to make his mark on the stat sheet. That changed in the third quarter Sunday, when starting free safety Montae Nicholson was carted off with an apparent ankle injury.

The Nicholson injury forced Apke into the game, and he didn’t wait long to make an impact.

It was a huge play, coming on fourth down during the 49ers’ first drive of the second half. He set the Redskins up on their own 47-yard line with the return and appears likely to receive a majority of the snaps at free safety the rest of the game.
