Trent Williams wants a trade out of Washington, and the Browns have been linked to acquiring the seven-time Pro Bowl tackle for nearly a year. Is now the time?
A new report from ESPN's Josina Anderson suggested that Cleveland trying to trade for Williams is "still on the table" but that "nothing is imminent or super close right now."
A trade between the Redskins and the Browns would make a lot of sense.
Cleveland spent big money to sign Jack Conklin to play right tackle, but on the left side, veteran Chris Hubbard looks like the current plan. Hubbard has started almost 40 games at right tackle in the last three seasons, but the difference between Hubbard and Trent Williams is significant, in the same way the Grand Canyon is significant.
The Browns also have the draft capital to pull off a trade. Sources have told NBC Sports Washington that the Redskins want second-round value in return for Williams, but that doesn't mean it has to be a second-round pick. Cleveland holds two third-round picks, the 74th and 97th selections, which on the conventional draft value chart add up to 332 points. That valuation is equal to about the 57th pick of the draft, a bottom-half pick in the second round.
There are other ways to make a trade work too. Cleveland could offer the 74th pick along with a player, but the issue is Cleveland has to want to make the trade.
The Browns hold the 10th pick in the first round, and it's highly possible they take a tackle in that spot. If that happens, there won't be a Williams trade.
Williams is a better tackle than anybody Cleveland can draft. That's just reality. But any tackle Cleveland can draft will be much cheaper than Williams. That's reality, too.
If the 10th pick comes and goes without a tackle, then Washington and Cleveland should start having serious conversations.
