At the very end of a terrible 2019 season questions are swirling about the future of the Redskins front office and what might happen with team president Bruce Allen.
MMQB's Albert Breer suggested that Washington might make a move to add a new football boss, and that could mean the end for Allen. From Breer via Twitter:
I’ve actually heard the Redskins have kicked around the idea of hiring an Executive Vice President of Football Operations, someone in that sort of role, to oversee everything. I don’t know whether they’ll go through with it. Going through with it would mean probably firing Bruce Allen. But I’ve heard they’ve at least kicked it around.
There are a few interesting wrinkles to consider here. To start, Doug Williams holds the title of senior vice president of player personnel. Eric Schaffer has the title of senior vice president of football operations as well as general counsel. Does EVP of football operations immediately outrank those other titles?
Further, even an executive vice president sounds lower than the team president, which is Allen's current title. Is it possible Allen is looking to add a new football boss while maintaining his role at the top of the pyramid?
It's hard to know.
The common belief in Ashburn says that as long as Bruce Allen is in the building, Bruce Allen is in charge. That's been the case for years, even when the organization hired Scot McCloughan to be general manager in 2015 and 2016.
It seems very likely the Redskins overhaul their coaching staff. Bill Callahan is the interim head coach, and while he wants the job long-term, there have been no talks about an extension.
In the front office, there is plenty of speculation that this season could finally lead to the ouster of Allen. He's reportedly been exiled among team executives. Allen has dodged major storms before, so stay tuned.
