RICHMOND — Fifty nine is one number that is mentioned a lot when talking about Derrius Guice. That, of course, is the slot in which he was selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, a slot much lower than nearly anyone expected him to go in the offseason event.
One thousand is another number tied to the Redskins' newest running back. That's the amount of yards many think he can get to as a rookie in Washington.
But when asked if that milestone, or any other season-long goal for that matter, is at the top of his mind with Week 1 closing in, Guice said no.
"I don't really have any [goals]," he told JP Finlay in an interview you can find on this Redskins Talk podcast.
Instead, No. 29 is opting to take a much shorter view on things.
"When I'm out there, I just play," he said. "How many yards I get at the end of the game, that's not going through my mind at the moment. What's going through my mind is knowing the playcalling and doing my best every play."
Players on the 'Skins all handle their goals differently. Some take on team-driven ones, like Jonathan Allen and Ryan Kerrigan have with improving the run defense. Others, such as Josh Doctson, set them but keep them private.
Guice, on the other hand, showed no interest in creating any. As of now, he didn't seem to care too much about starting against Arizona to kick off the regular season, either.
"I don't care," he said. "As long as I play."
Guice will play and play plenty. And while he may not be working toward piling up specific stats or rising to the top of the depth chart, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see him succeed in achieving both the former and the latter.
