Redskins QB Colt McCoy’s status still uncertain as he misses practice again

Redskins QB Colt McCoy’s status still uncertain as he misses practice again

Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy again did not participate in practice on Sunday and his status for the start of the regular season remains unclear, according to coach Jay Gruden.

McCoy, in a quarterback competition with Case Keenum and Dwayne Haskins, has yet to play in a preseason game. He remained confident that his recovery from a broken right leg last Dec. 4 is on track despite setbacks during the offseason and a recurrence of pain during training camp.

“Sooner rather than later,” McCoy told reporters in the locker room after practice when asked his assessment of a return.

But that might be wishful thinking. McCoy admitted he went to see renowned foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson while the Redskins were in Richmond for training camp. There is no sign he’s about to return to practice this week before a Thursday preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

“It might not be the end of camp, it might be two or three weeks into the season,” Gruden said. “We don't know yet. Like I said, there's no timetable for him until he feels like he's 100 percent to push off that leg. Until that time comes, he's going to be rehabbing.”

Gruden admitted surprise that the broken leg hasn’t healed completely almost months after McCoy went down in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles, but cast no blame on the training or medical staff and called it “a fluke-type thing.”

Gruden said that McCoy did not re-aggravate the injury at all during training camp in Richmond. It’s the same injury he’s been trying to heal from for months. He also wasn’t ready to say if the Redskins would pursue another quarterback.

That can wait until after the third preseason game and when they have a better idea of McCoy’s status and whether they absolutely need one on the roster. For now, Gruden believes McCoy is on a path to return. It shouldn’t be too long. Maybe. But when, exactly, has left everyone frustrated.

Gruden rules Colt McCoy out for Redskins second preseason game

Expected Redskins starter for the upcoming season, Colt McCoy, has been officially ruled out of Thursday nights preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Right now he’s not able to do much," Gruden said. "He's dealing with the same injury from last December."

McCoy broke his fibula in a December 3rd game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tomorrow night Case Keenum will start and then Dwayne Haskins will follow.

It's looked like the job has been McCoy's to lose all offseason, but this development surrounding his recovery timetable will definitely add some suspense in D.C.

Redskins QB Situation: Dwayne Haskins emerges with best day so far in Richmond

Redskins QB Situation: Dwayne Haskins emerges with best day so far in Richmond

As the Redskins have an honest-to-goodness quarterback battle raging at training camp, each day of practice there will be an updated post on what passer won the day.

RICHMOND -- The day Redskins fans waited for since the NFL Draft back in April arrived. Dwayne Haskins showed that he can be a special quarterback on Sunday, dialing in touch passes and throwing a few lasers as well.

It was by far the best Haskins has looked in a Redskins uniform, and his teammates noticed too.

Early in the practice session, Haskins called an audible at the line of scrimmage. In the past few days, those haven't gone well, and many line changes have resulted in false starts or sacks. This time, however, it worked well, as Haskins got the snap count right and fired a quick gainer down the right side.

It was one play in July, but it showed that some of the mental stuff Haskins has struggled with might be turning a corner. Before any real celebrations start, Haskins needs to string days like Sunday together. If he can start doing that, then all of a sudden Washington has a different scenario in their QB battle.

Haskins wasn't the only passer to excel on Sunday. Colt McCoy got most of the work with the first team and looked strong. Case Keenum saw a slightly decreased workload but still looked good. In fact, it's possible all three QBs had their best day of practice simultaneously, but the difference is Keenum and McCoy have had other good days. Haskins hadn't, until Sunday.

Day 4 QB Performance

  1. Dwayne Haskins
  2. Colt McCoy
  3. Case Keenum
