Caps chip in to help Hurricane Irma evacuees

The Capitals donated thousands of bottles of water and sports drinks to a hurricane shelter in Southwest Florida over the weekend, a team official confirmed.

The team had recently shipped 90 cases of water and 40 cases of Gatorade shipped to Estero, Fla., for use by the organization’s prospects, who had been scheduled to participate in a rookie tournament Sept. 8-12.

That tournament, however, had to be called off last Wednesday due to concerns about Hurricane Irma, which tore through the area on Saturday and Sunday.

The Capitals opted to leave the supplies at Germain Arena in Estero for residents who had evacuated their homes. In recent days, the 8,500-seat venue—and home to the minor league Florida Everblades—has been used as a shelter.

Caps cancel rookie tournament over concerns about Hurricane Irma

Due to concerns about Hurricane Irma, the Capitals have canceled the four-team tournament their rookies had been set to attend later this week in Estero, Fla.

The tournament was also scheduled to include top prospects from the Predators, Lightning and Panthers. On-ice activities had been set to begin Friday morning in Florida, which has declared a state emergency with the powerful hurricane taking aim and potentially making landfall this weekend. The tournament would have concluded next Tuesday.

Washington, which was serving as the tournament’s host, was in discussions to move the tournament to the Predators' practice facility. The logistics of moving equipment from Florida to Nashville as well as rescheduling flights for four clubs’ worth of players, coaches and support staff, however, was not feasible on such short notice.

Germain Arena in Estero is also a designated hurricane shelter.

Earlier in the day, the NFL postponed Sunday's Buccaneers-Dolphins game, pushing it to Nov. 19. Meanwhile, Miami at Arkansas State was canceled.
