The U.S. 4x400m mixed relay team of Trevor Stewart, Kendall Ellis, Kaylin Whitney and Vernon Norwood won bronze Saturday morning with a time of 3:10.22.
Poland won gold, while Dominican Republic claimed silver in the historic event, which was the first in Olympic history.
Team USA was favored to win the event before Poland pulled off the upset victory.
The American team was initially disqualified due to an exchange zone foul on the first handoff between Elija Godwin and Lynna Irby in the qualifying race, but it was reinstated after a successful appeal. None of the four U.S. runners from the qualifying race competed in the final.
American star Allyson Felix also did not compete on the 4x400m team. Felix, who had won nine Olympic medals entering Tokyo, is just one medal away from becoming the most decorated woman in Olympic track and field history. Carl Lewis (11) is the only American track and field Olympian with more medals than Felix.
